Children's education
The present Covid-19 restrictions mean that most children are online during the school day so we are offering online workshops that are focussed on working with our hands indoors and organised around taking exploratory trips outside that the children report back on to the workshops.
We will be producing worksheets to guide the children’s outdoor exploration and these can be used to visit other outdoor spaces as well.
We also hope that children will be involved in the Growing Together project and will be planting seeds with their parents.
Here is the program for the next two months:
Making felt balls
Friday 5th February 2021 • 5.30pm
This will be organised around making felt balls. It will introduce the children and adults to making felt, learning about how the wool binds together and at the same time making multi-coloured felt balls. There will be a pack to collect of wool, including some ‘raw’ wool so the children can see what the wool straight from the sheep’s back is like.
We will have a story from Harriet at the end of the session.
Explore the garden

Saturday 13th February 2021 • 10am-1pm
This is a chance for children to come and explore the garden. They will have a worksheet to guide their exploration with a brief for a drawing or painting to do after they have visited. Once you have registered you will be sent the worksheet. Each family will need to register a half-hour slot to come and visit.
Dyeing silk scarves
Friday 19th February 2021
This session will offer the opportunity for children to learn about dyeing silk scarves with natural dyes. We will use materials you can find in your kitchen: onion skins, avocado, turmeric, blueberries. We will provide a pack with a silk scarf (pre-mordanted so the dye will ‘take’) and some elastic bands (to create patterns in your silk scarves).
We will have a story from Harriet at the end of the session.
Explore the garden

Saturday 27th February 2021 • 10am-1pm
This is another chance for children to come and explore the garden. They will have a worksheet to guide their exploration with a brief for a drawing or painting to do after they have visited. Once you have registered you will be sent the worksheet. Each family will need to register a half-hour slot to come and visit.
Making felt broaches
Friday 5th March 2021
Having made felt balls this session will show the children (and adults) how to make flat felt which can be decorated with different colours and made into a broach or a piece of appliqué. We will provide a pack with the wool you’ll need.
We will have a story from Harriet at the end of the session.

Bundle dyeing
Friday 19th March 2021

Children’s activities 2020
What we get up to in the garden
The Covid restrictions have meant that only one family has been able to visit at a time, but we’ve still had really good fun in the garden with lots of different activities. If you would like to join us please email jbcg@nubianlife.org.uk and we’ll let you know about the next sessions in the garden.
